Blood Cancer Treatment

What is Blood Cancer?

Before understanding the blood cancer and its treatment, it is necessary to learn about the compositions of blood. Our blood cells are diversified in three different categories. The first category refers to red blood cells which are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. The second major component of blood is white blood cells which helps the body to fight infections. Platelets are the remaining entity responsible for clotting of blood. All different types of blood cells come from stem cells. Stem cells have the natural capability to develop any kind of blood cell as they divide and mature. Every second our body develops new cells and destroy old ones. These cells comprise a unified structure of DNA which is like a code for development, maturity and death of cells. Any abnormality in the stem cell DNA can lead toward the formation of abnormal blood cells which fall under the category of cancer cells. These cells were not able to develop properly and fail to die when they should have. These abnormalities in the formation of blood give rise to blood cancer.

Any hindrance or change in the process of blood formation is termed ‘differentiation’ in medical terms. This differentiation is the main reason behind the occurrence of any type of blood cancer. Due to differentiation, your body ends up producing a very large quality of immature blood cells which are not able to perform their duties properly. This can also result in clogging up of the bone marrow by these excessive cells which in turn reflects upon the performance of other types of blood cells too.

Every single type of blood cancer is the result of a mutation in DNA or can be simply termed as a fault in DNA. Even though medical technologies are improved to a great extent, the exact reasons for the changes in the DNA structure cannot be justified. Still, some research put light on the facts which can enhance the possibilities of developing certain kinds of blood cancer.  Blood cancer treatment relies entirely upon its cause and symptoms.

Types of Blood Cancer

Before beginning any protocol for blood cancer cure in India, you need to find out the type of cancer. As we discussed previously that blood cancer occurs due to the abnormality in blood cells. The type of blood cancer is dependent on the type of blood cells that have been affected. There are three major categories of blood cancer which are:

Leukemia

This type of cancer affects the formation of white blood cells and bone marrow. It happens when your leukocytes (white blood cells) develop cancerous properties. In leukemia, immature blood cells are made due to quick division and fail to grow into mature cells. These cell formations occur in the bone marrow of our body. As these cells divide at a high speed and fail to mature, they crowd the bone marrow and which in turn hinders the process of formation of normal healthy cells.

Leukemia is divided into two major groups on the basis of how fast the disease in developing in the body. Acute leukemia spreads more quickly in the blood cells whereas chronic leukemia takes a longer time to develop.

Lymphoma

Our lymphatic system is built up in the form of tubes or vessels which run along the body similar to the blood vessels and work together with it. The lymphatic system carries water like thin fluid which is termed as lymph. This lymph fluid consists a large number of blood cells which are known as called lymphocytes. There are two kinds of lymphocytes known as B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes which are produced in the Lymphatic system and help the body to fight against infections.

The white cells are further distinguished multiple types known as myeloid and lymphoid cells. The Myeloid cells are converted in red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets upon maturation. On the other hand, Lymphoid cells are mature into white blood cells which are known as lymphocytes. Lymphoma occurs when lymphocytes become cancerous. Usually, Lymphoma develops into the lymph glands and termed as the cancer of the lymphatic system. This type of cancer result into swelling and elongation of the lymph glands.

Breaking it down a little more, Lymphoma is categorized into two different types. One is known as Hodgkin while another one is known as non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The major distinction between the two types is based on the appearance of Lymphoma cells under the microscope.

Myeloma

This kind of cancer arises when the plasma cells in the blood become cancerous.  Myeloma is generally termed as cancer occurring in the plasma cells in the bone marrow where the production of red and white blood cells and platelets takes place.  Plasma cells are also found in the bone marrow.  These plasma cells are normally involved in the production of antibodies (immunoglobulins) which fight against infections and develop the immune system of the body.

In the case of Myeloma, the plasma cells develop abnormally and termed as myeloma cells. Usually, these myeloma cells form up a large amount of abnormal antibody of a single type. This abnormal antibody is termed as paraprotein in medical terms and can be seen in blood and urine of the patient suffering from this kind of cancer.

The paraprotein is not able to fight infection properly and can significantly reduce the number of normal antibody formations. Due to the development of the myeloma cells in the bone marrow, the space for new development of plasma cells to also got reduced. These cells can spread easily from the bone marrow to the stronger part of the bone and can cause severe damage to the bone tissue. The bone marrow of multiple bones can be affected by Myeloma at the same time resulting in Multiple Myeloma. Several kinds of research are being done to find the blood cancer cure in India as well as other countries.

Signs and Symptoms of Blood Cancer

  • Abdominal pain commonly occurring in the upper portion of the abdomen
  • Easily occurring bone fractures even as the result of from minimal trauma)
  • Recurring or continuous pain in joints or bones.
  • Easily occurring bleeding or bruising
  • Enlargement of  liver and other glands which include also spleen and lymph nodes
  • Increase in Fatigue
  • Hot and cold flashes with Fever
  • Having an infection easily
  • Increase in urination
  • Recurring Nausea or morning sickness

What causes Blood Cancer?

It is hard to specify the actual cause of blood cancer but there are a number of factors which can be associated with the development of cancer cells in the body. Few types of blood cancers are seen to occur commonly in older adults while some other types can be hereditary. Apart from that, some type of internal and external infections can also increase the risk of a certain kind of blood cancer due to the weakened immune system. The treatment of blood cancer varies according to its cause.

Factors for Blood Cancer

There are several factors which can increase the risk of blood cancer. It is important to note that not everyone with these factors will be affected form blood cancer but it may enhance the chances for one having it. These factors include:

  • Increasing age
  • Some kind of infections
  • Exposure to certain chemicals
  • Damaged immune system
  • Exposure to radiation
  • Heredity
  • HIV/AIDS

Treatment and Therapies in India

If you are looking for the best approach to cure cancer, you need to take into consideration several factors before choosing the course of treatment. These factors include

  • Your current condition
  • How early cancer was diagnosed
  • The symptoms your body is showing and its likeliness to respond to treatment
  • Your genetics, age and health factors

Some cases of cancer can be treated through non-curative treatments like regular blood transfusions. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are mostly used for blood cancer treatment. Apart from those, stem cell transplant is also considered as one of the best blood cancer treatment practices especially when previous treatment fails to control the disease.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy drugs are specially designed to target the affected blood cells and prevent their division. Cancerous cells divide more rapidly than normal cells. That’s why Chemotherapy is widely accepted for blood cancer treatment in India and other countries.

Radiotherapy

This kind of therapy is done with the use of X-rays to destroy cancer cells. But it can also damage normal cells which can result in severe side effects.

Ayurvedic Treatments

Ayurvedic treatment for Blood Cancer can be used along with the radiotherapy or chemotherapy which can help in protecting healthy cells and fast recovery. In addition to that, Ayurvedic herbs can significantly decrease the risk of side effects of modern treatments.

Stem Cell Transplant

Stem cell transplantation is often termed as bone marrow transplant. In this procedure, the unhealthy blood-forming cells are replaced with healthy cells allowing the doctors to give large doses of chemotherapy or radiation therapy for restoring normal blood cell production.

Cost of Blood Cancer treatment in India

The cost of blood cancer treatment varies greatly depending on the type and diagnosis of cancer. On an average, best the treatment cost for a six-month therapy session can range from Rs.  2.5 lakh to Rs.20 lakh.
