Lifestyle Changes To Avert “CANCER”

Cancer rates are relatively lower in India when compared to those in Western countries. But as our developing nation is transforming into a developed nation, the numbers are rising. 

Cancer is scary, but doctors and science have come a long way in understanding the biology of cancer cells and the diagnosis and course of treatment are constantly improving. Cancer may be defined as the multiplication of abnormal cells in any area of the body that spreads and causes abnormalities. Though the cause behind cancer is still evolving, the risk of cancer depends on certain lifestyle choices which in conjunction with the immune system play an important role in the presence and survival of cancer cells. Now, genetics or environmental conditions that also contribute to cancer are out of our control so, all we need do is work on what we can. By making the right changes in our lifestyle, it is well-accepted that we can decrease the risk of cancer. The 6 simple lifestyle changes that we need to make to avert cancer are:

Avoiding tobacco

Any sources of tobacco, cigarettes, pipes, cigars or chewing tobacco, puts you on the direct collision path with cancer. Smoking causes lung, mouth, throat, larynx, bladder, cervix and kidney cancer while chewing tobacco leads to oral and pancreatic cancer. It is said that even passive smoking increases the risk of cancer. Quitting cigarettes or tobacco consumption of any form is hard but with the right help can be done.    

Eating a healthy diet

No superfood has proven to beat cancer but making healthy food choices can help reduce the chances of you developing cancer. Consuming more fruits, vegetables, pulses and grains over red meat and processed meat, processed sugar and junk food is important. Maintaining a healthy weight and exercising regularly

Risky behaviour that might lead to infections can in turn increase the risk of cancer. Practising safer sex is necessary to avoid contracting STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) like HIV or HPV. Sharing needles or razors with people suffering from HIV, hepatitis B or C can contribute to cancer and hence, must be avoided.    

Consuming alcohol moderately 

Excess consumption of alcohol causes mouth, colon, liver, oesophagus (food pipe) and larynx (voice box) cancer and leads to excess production of estrogen in women’s bodies, increasing the risk of breast cancer. It is therefore recommended that if you choose to drink alcohol, you should limit yourself to less than 1 drink a day.

When it comes to cancer, we do not have all the answers but if by choosing a healthier lifestyle we can avert the risk of detecting cancer, it is a change worth making.
